Frequently Asked Questions
Essential answers to the most critical questions travelers ask about visas, trekking permits, high altitude safety, local currency, teahouse logistics, and cultural etiquette in Nepal.
Yes, most nationalities can obtain an On-Arrival Tourist Visa at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, as well as land border crossings. Costs are $30 USD for 15 days, $50 USD for 30 days, or $125 USD for 90 days (payable in USD, EUR, GBP, or major currencies; cash is recommended as card machines can be slow). You must have a passport valid for at least 6 months. To save time, fill out the official online visa pre-arrival form at online.nepalimmigration.gov.np within 15 days prior to arrival.
Effective April 1, 2023, the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) mandated that solo foreign trekkers must hire a licensed trekking guide or porter-guide registered with the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) for treks in national parks and conservation areas (such as Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu). While the Everest region (Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality) currently permits independent trekkers through its local permit system, hiring an experienced Sherpa guide is highly recommended for safety, navigation, and emergency evacuation management.
