A mystical high-altitude desert kingdom preserved behind the Himalayas, featuring walled medieval cities, cliffside sky caves, and authentic ancient Tibetan culture.

Overview

Tucked in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, Upper Mustang was a restricted autonomous kingdom until 1992. Today, visitors explore surreal wind-carved red clay canyons, 800-year-old painted gompas, mysterious prehistoric sky caves carved into sheer vertical cliffs, and the fortified capital of Lo Manthang where the royal palace still stands.
